Atacama Consulting undertook a Cumulative Impact Assessment (CIA) for a cascade of five hydropower projects ranging from 2MW to 67MW along Rivers Achwa and Agago in the Northern Uganda districts of Gulu and Pader.
As part of this assignment, Atacama Consulting reviewed and aligned project documents to applicable national and international legislation, conducted detailed assessments of the project’s environmental and social setting and held stakeholder consultations with lead agencies, district local authorities, sub-county leaders, village leaders, and affected local communities.
The team identified and evaluated the cumulative environmental and social risks and impacts associated with the construction and operation of the projects, suggested mitigation measures, and prepared a CIA report in accordance with IFC Performance Standards. This comprehensive approach, completed in July 2017, ensures that the cumulative impacts of the five hydropower projects are effectively managed and mitigated, promoting sustainable development in the region.
